Hamburger Steak with Onions & Gravy

An old fashioned Hamburger Steak topped with cooked onion's and smothered in a homemade gravy.

Growing up Hamburger Steak with Gravy was one of my favorite meals and also one of the first recipes my mother taught me to cook. Simple country cookin' and old fashioned comfort food has always been a favorite of mine. You know all those recipes that your mom and grandmother use to cook that immediately remind you of home. Goodness,  there's nothing better in my book!

What I love most about this hamburger steak recipe is that it calls for basic ingredients that you probably have on hand right now in your pantry. That was the one thing I loved about my mothers cooking how, she could take simple ingredients and cheap cuts of meat and turn them into delicious dinner meals.

Most anytime we stop at a diner, beef tips or hamburger steak and gravy is usually what I order. It never does compare to my mother's recipe and the gravy is always different, so making it at home is always so much better.

Traditionally hamburger steak and gravy is smothered with onions and served with mashed potatoes or rice, but I have served it over noodles as well. Pair with a cooked vegetable, fresh sliced garden tomatoes and biscuit bread to complete your meal. If you're looking for a simple dish to dress up ground beef this is definitely the recipe for you! Let's get started.

In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, onion powder, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Form into 6 balls and flatten into patties. Using your finger, make a hole in the middle of each of the patties (to prevent shrinkage) and then dust the patties with flour.

Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Once it's nice and hot, add the patties and cook on each side until brown and seared on each side.

Push the patties to the side while they cook and add the sliced onion. Cook the onions until golden and translucent. Remove patties and onions to a plate, reserving a bit of the grease and bits of cooked meat. Add 1 1/2 tablespoons flour and mix using a whisk making sure to scrape up all the cooked bits. Add the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring together until blended.

Return the patties and the cooked onions back to the skillet. cover, reduce heat to low and simmer for about 30 minutes or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy thickens up a bit.

Serve with mashed potatoes or rice. These delicious refrigerator pickles made with garden fresh vegetables is also wonderful served along side.
